How many questions are on the citizenship test?

The USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 questions from the official list of 128 civics questions (2025 version). You must answer at least 12 correctly to pass. The test is oral: the officer asks and you answer out loud.

Who takes the 2025 version with 128 questions?

Applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025. If you filed before that date, you take the 2008 version with 100 questions (10 questions, 6 correct to pass).

What is the 65/20 exception?

Accepted Answer

If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 or more years, you only need to study the 20 starred questions. You will be asked 10 of those 20 and must answer at least 6 correctly. You may also take the test in your language.

Do the answers change over time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Some answers change because of elections or appointments (president, vice president, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, your governor, and your senators). You must answer with the official serving on the day of your interview; check uscis.gov/citizenship/testupdates.
